"The Secrets to Losing Weight"
Annie Malaythong - Director of IatroFitness and Health Coach
Let's try to simplify everything to one BIG question:
1. How do I lose weight?
Everyone would be losing weight if it were that easy right? I guess 76% of Americans wouldn't be considered overweight... and a lot of us wouldn't be in this boat, again. I say 'again', because it seems like every time I'm talking to someone it's the same "I need to lose weight." story. Sound a little like you perhaps? Well, losing weight is actually that simple. Losing weight is as simple as calories in vs. calories out. Keep in mind, keeping the weight off and looking a certain way is another story. That's where all of this gets tricky and 500 hundred other questions arise. But losing weight, trust me, is very simple. The lowest amount of calories we recommend to any of our clients to consume is 1200 calories. It's just scientifically proven for "normal" brain function.
Basing your weight loss on individuals goals, initial assessment, workout regimen, lifestyle and BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is where it gets confusing. Many of you have no clue to what these are. No worries... I'm here to help! So the next question is...
2. What is my BMR and why is it so important to lose weight?
Everyone, of course, has a BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate). To keep it simple, your BMR is the number of calories you'd burn if you were to stay in bed all day. Your BMR is important because this helps you calculate how many calories you need to consume, how many calories you need to burn, and how many pounds you will lose by the end of the week. Here's the trick... if you are not tracking or aware of how many calories you are consuming now, start tracking! That is a great way to start! Then, slowly cut calories. Again, not only do you want to lose weight, we want to KEEP THE WEIGHT OFF! Which leads me to the next question...
3. How much should I workout?
Based on what your BMR is again, and how many calories you are currently consuming, you will have to be in deficit or burn 3500 calories to lose 1 lb! Healthy, sustainable weight to lose per week is 1.5 lb-2 lb a week. Remember, it takes 3500 calories of burn/workout/strength training/workout to burn 1 lb! Time to start tracking and being aware of what you are consuming and burning! As your body changes, as does your BMR... time to revamp!
So there you are.. the two biggest secrets revealed!
